About the Support Program for Distinctive University Education
The program, sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), aims to vitalize higher education.
Distinctive and outstanding efforts are selected by MEXT from among the various steps being taken to help improve education at universities and junior colleges (these efforts are implemented by the Support Program for Distinctive University Education Committee) and broad public coverage of these case studies is provided, as well as financial assistance. The intention is that it will provide an incentive to university teachers for action to improve education through national, public and private universities, offer hints to other universities in drawing up measures, and encourage the vitalization of higher education.

Activities of the School of Bioscience and Biotechnology
Competitive education through the development of bio educational materials for elementary, junior high and high school children
Nurturing a competitive and imaginative creativity by getting students to make educational material.
With the objective of fostering students who think for themselves and improvise in their studies. The School of Bioscience and Biotechnology has, since FY 2005, held a 'bio creation and design' course for all of the 170 first year students. The course is the result of the systemization of the freshman's seminar held by the School over the past 10 years. In this course, taking as its theme the development of educational material for elementary, junior high and high school students, group learning is carried out based on a concept of 'teaching is learning.' The students compete over the results of these activities at the Titech Biocontest, which is an event where the results are made public to participating citizens and businesses.
This effort was selected for the MEXT-sponsored Support Program for Distinctive University Education (Distinctive GP/Good Practice)in FY 2006.
From FY 2007, 'bio creation and design II' was launched as a progression of this course, aimed at third-year students, and in April 2007, the Art and Crafts Education and Research Support Center Suzukakedai Branch was opened. The center is equipped with a computer room, labs, workshops and a common room, and has become a place which supports the free thinking and imagination of students studying at the Suzukakedai Campus.
