21st Century COE Program

A unified theme of this program is "molecular recognition", which lies at the root of every biological process. With the belief that excellent basic research will always lead to excellent application, we are exploring new frontiers of research. For this, cooperation among a broad spectrum of disciplines needs to be strengthened because life science is now deeply interlaced with other fields of acience and technology. Universities are being asked to return thier academic achievements to the society. In this program, taking advantage of our experience in the first interdisciplinary life science graduate school in Japan, we will form Frontier System of Bioengineering, an international research and education center aiming at the creation of innovative technology and materials. Furthermore, on the basis of outstanding achoevements, we will found International Center for Molecular Recognition to drive organizational research.

Frontier System of Bioengineering

COE Program Group Leader  : Professor Hiroshi HANDA
