Doctoral Program, Bioscience and Biotechnology Course

Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech), in close cooperation with RIKEN, offers the Tokyo Institute of Technology - RIKEN International School program, which provides international students an opportunity to enroll directly in a doctoral program at Tokyo Tech. Tokyo Tech offers only the October admission option for this program. The Tokyo Institute of Technology - RIKEN International School’s Bioscience and Biotechnology Course is conducted through the Graduate School of Bioscience and Biotechnology at Tokyo Tech.

 Applicants admitted to this School will have two academic advisors, one from Tokyo Tech and one from RIKEN, both of whom will supervise the student. Similarly, the admitted student will conduct research at both institutions. Students in this program, on the condition of their procurement of a student visa, will be admitted as RIKEN International Program Associates (IPA). As RIKEN IPA students will receive a living allowance of \5,200 (JPY) per day as well as a housing allowance of up to \70,000 (JPY) per month. Both allowances will be provided for up to three years. However, those admitted to the Tokyo Institute of Technology - RIKEN International School will be required to pay Admission and Tuition Fees.

1. Outline of the Bioscience and Biotechnology Course

This course is established in the International Graduate Program of the Graduate School of Bioscience and Biotechnology. The doctoral program provides an excellent opportunity for graduate students from around the world to pursue advanced R&D in Bioscience and Biotechnology at both Tokyo Tech and RIKEN. In particular, the scientific fields of this course center on bioengineering, bio-materials, bioorganic chemistry, biosensor, bio-tips, brain science, cell biology, chemical biology, environmental biotechnology, extremophiles, genome-based drug discovery, intracellular traffic, lipid science, molecular imaging, plant science, and structure biology.Graduates are expected to become global leaders in basic R&D of Bioscience and Biotechnology.

3. Application Types

There are three types of applications: the Overseas Application, the Domestic Application, and the Internal Application.

(1) Overseas Application

Non-Japanese citizens, not residing in Japan, who have obtained a master's or professional degree from an institution either in Japan or abroad, or who are expected to have obtained such a degree from an institution abroad by September 30, 2015, are required to fill out the Overseas Application.

(2) Domestic Application

Non-Japanese citizens, residing in Japan, who have obtained a master's or professional degree from an institution either in Japan or abroad, or are expected to have obtained such a degree by September 30, 2015 from an institution in Japan other than Tokyo Institute of Technology, are required to fill out the Domestic Application.

(3) Internal Application

Non-Japanese citizens who are enrolled in a Tokyo Tech Master's Program or in the Department of Management of Technology (MOT) and who are expected to have obtained a master's degree from Tokyo Institute of Technology by September 30, 2015 are required to fill out the Internal Application. If the Internal applicant is not selected for enrollment as a doctoral student in the Tokyo Institute of Technology - RIKEN International School program, he or she may still be considered for enrollment as a doctoral student in the Tokyo Institute of Technology Graduate School of Bioscience and Biotechnology.

4. Application Procedures

After choosing his or her preferred theme of research and academic advisors and prior to submitting the application documents, the applicant is required to submit a Contact Form (linked below) to the Contact Person for the Bioscience and Biotechnology Course.

(2) Domestic Application

Domestic Applicants are required to submit both a Contact Form and application documents for Riken International Program Associates (IPA) prior to submitting the formal application for admission to the Tokyo Institute of Technology Graduate School Doctoral Program.

The Contact Form must be sent to the Contact Person for the Bioscience and Biotechnology Course at bio.titech.riken[at]jim.titech.ac.jp no later than May 29, 2015.

    Acceptable English Proficiency Tests include the following four tests:
    • TOEFL-iBT
    • TOEFL-PBT
    • TOEIC
    • IELTS Academic Module
    TOEFL/Examinee Score Reports, TOEIC/Official Score Certificates, and IELTS/Test Report Form will be accepted. Official score reports sent directly from the testing organization to the Institute will not be accepted. Only test scores from the two years prior to the application deadline (July 1, 2015) will be accepted. Score sheets from the TOEFL-ITP, TOEIC-IP and other special group-system tests will not be accepted.
    Native English speakers or students who have been awarded an undergraduate and/or graduate degree from an institution where their education was conducted in English may not be required to take the examination of English proficiency. Such applicants should consult with their intended academic advisor prior to submission of the application form to verify that they are waived from this application requirement.
  8. 1 Photograph (3cm×4cm) taken within the past 6 months
  9. A copy of the page in the applicant’s passport showing the applicant’s picture and name

Riken IPA application documents sent through the mail should be sent by registered express mail so as to arrive by Friday, May 29, 2015.

For hand-delivery of Riken IPA application documents, the contact point for application is the Exchange Project Group, International Student Exchange Division (Room 308, South Building 6, Ookayama Campus). Please note that Riken IPA applications will not be accepted at the Suzukakedai Campus. Over-the-counter acceptance of Riken IPA applications will take place from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 13:00 to 15:00 on Wednesday, May 27, Thursday, May 28, and Friday, May 29. Riken IPA Applications will not be accepted over the counter at any other time.

The Contact Person will contact the applicant by June 24, 2015. If the Contact Person does not contact the applicant by June 25, 2015, the applicant should remind the Contact Person again by email.

Following the instructions of the Contact Person, the applicant should proceed with the formal application process for admission to the Tokyo Institute of Technology Graduate School Doctoral Program. For more information about the Domestic Application for admission to the Doctoral Program at Tokyo Tech – Riken International School please refer to this website.

Applicants must prepare the application documents listed in the admission guide for the “Doctoral Program Commencing in October 2015.” Please be aware that the documents submitted for the Riken International Program Associate (IPA) application will be regarded as separate from the application documents for the Doctoral Program.

The deadline for the submission of Doctoral Program applications is July 1, 2015. If sending by mail, please use registered express mail to ensure delivery by that date.

Hand-delivered applications will be accepted over the counter by the Admission Division (Room 212, West Building 8E, Ookayama Campus) from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 13:00 to 15:00 on Monday, June 29, Tuesday, June 30, and Wednesday, July 1. Please note that applications will not be accepted at the Suzukakedai Campus.

Applicants whose Doctoral Program applications are complete will be notified of the date and place of the Entrance Examination. The Examination will be held during the period of Monday, August 17, 2015 to Saturday, August 22, 2015.

(3) Internal Application

Those applying for entrance under the Internal Application procedures must submit the Contact Form, the Internal Application Form, and the application documents for Riken International Program Associates (IPA).

Prior to submitting the Internal Application Form and the Riken IPA application documents, Internal Applicants are required to send the Contact Form to the Contact Person for the Bioscience and Biotechnology Course at bio.titech.riken[at]jim.titech.ac.jp no later than May 15, 2015.

The Contact Person will contact the applicant by May 22, 2015. If the Contact Person does not contact the applicant by May 23, 2015, the applicant should remind the Contact Person again by email.

After receiving instructions from the Contact Person to proceed with the formal application, the applicant must submit the Internal Application Form to the Student Group, Student Division (Suzukakedai Campus, J-1 Building, 1F) by June 3, 2015.
Note: this form is only available in paper form from the Student Group, Student Division.
Concurrently, the applicant must submit the following Application documents for Riken International Program Associates (IPA) to the International Student Division (Ookayama Campus).
